MILITARISM IN SCHOOLS

We take a ten-year span, ’says Colonel David Allfrey, head of army recruitment strategy. ‘It starts with a seven-year-old boy seeing a parachutist at an air show and thinking, ‘That looks great.’ From then on the army is trying to build interest by drip, drip, drip.’

MILITARISM INDEX

Submission on the Purpose and quality of education in England inquiry to the Commons Education Select Committee.

The Peace Pledge Union’s submission is part of its strategy to oppose the insidious creep of militarism into British society. This particular submission, in part, draws Parliament’s attention to how militarism is being extended into the country’s state education system.

The PPU’s position on militarism in schools or elsewhere in society is not, however, just a string of oppositional statements. The PPU, here and elsewhere, will be spelling out alternative approaches and visions that include different methods of working; methods that rely upon cooperation, sensitivity, critical awareness, mutual understanding, balance and above all non violence.

It is quite possible that some of the sentiments and views expressed here will not receive universal approbation from PPU members and supporters. The PPU wants to hear from you all, whatever your views of this submission, so that you can help us to build a consensus approach to the growth of militarism in the UK.
