CAMBRIDGE

Victorious the allies might have been but peace after all did not flow out of the barrel of a gun.

In this unintentionally ironic photograph taken in October 1939, English troops with rifle on their shoulders are marching towards Cambridge railway station and on their way to another war.

They turn their heads to look at their predecessor up on his plinth as he strides in the opposite direction. Many of them will not come back but illusions about the power of the gun will live on.
