THIEPVAL

< back

Thiepval Memorial on the Somme is one of the largest memorials to Britain's war dead. On the memorial's columns are the names of 72,000 British soldiers killed in the Somme area whose bodies have not been found. There are also 600 British and French graves on the slope at the back of the memorial.

The memorial was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens; the space needed for the vast number of names influenced the shape.
