Note the 'crusader's' sword on the coffin; this was brought specially from the Tower of London and attached to the coffin in France before its journey to London.

The sword intended to signify valour, nobility and chivalry and therefore give greater significance and status to the event can be interpreted in different ways.

One could ask what is the value of valour when forced to march into machine gun fire and almost certain death, or where is the nobility in shoveling shells into canons whose target may be precisely calculated but never seen; rat infested trenches are a poor backdrop to chivalric fantasies.
