The 1972 Biological and Toxic Weapons Convention bans the development, production and stockpiling of biological agents that have no peaceful justification. In 2001, the USA blocked proposals to strengthen the way the implementation of the treaty is monitored.

The 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention bans development, production, stockpiling and use of chemical gas weapons since 1945. The only proven use of such weapons is by Egypt in Yemen in the 1960s and Iraq against Kurdish villagers and Iran in 1988.
