International Conscientious Objectors' Day ceremony in London

We will gather in London to remember all those who have struggled for the right to refuse to kill and to offer our solidarity to conscientious objectors across the world today. This is one of many events taking place around the globe on 15th May.

This ceremony is organised by the First World War Peace Forum, a coalition of groups whose members include the Peace Pledge Union.

We will gather at the Conscientious Objectors' memorial stone in Tavistock Square (near Euston). We will hear about conscientious objectors past and present, lay flowers to remember them, share songs and hear about important campaigns going on today.

There will be brief contributions from:

  • Michael Lyons, a former member of the Royal Navy, imprisoned in 2011 after developing a conscientious objection to the war in Afghanistan - the most recently impriosoned conscientious objector in the UK.
  • Lois Bibbings, historian from the University of Bristol, a specialist in conscientious objection in the First World War and author of Telling Tales About Men.
  • Jay Sutherland, who resisted militarism in his own school in Ayrshire over recent years and is an example of conscientious objection to everyday militarism today.

There will be songs led by Sue Gilmurray.

Everyone is very welcome at the event.
