After two years in which Armed Forces Day events were limited by the Covid pandemic, the government and military leaders are again planning events that will present war as normal and seek to put the armed forces beyond scrutiny.
As usual, we can expect to see children invited to handle real weapons and given a simplistic image of war. You can read our briefing, What's Wrong With Armed Forces Day?
There are many ways you can join our day of action:
1. Speak out in your local community.
2. Protest at the Armed Forces Day National Event in Scarborough.
3. Take action online.
You can find out more here about all three of them!
There will be a demonstration against militarism at the Armed Forces Day National Event in Scarborough, calling for military leaders to be held to account and drawing attention to the reality of armed forces as abusive institutions. It will be smaller scale than expected due to the rail strike, but we hope local supporters of peace will turn out!
There will be other demonstrations and vigils elsewhere in the UK, including London and Manchester. Some of these protests are organised by the Peace Pledge Union, or by PPU members, in conjunction with other national or local groups. The PPU will also be backing events organised by others.
If you are organising a protest or other event in your area, or would like support and advice about doing so, please get in touch with us! You can reach us at mail@ppu.org.uk or on 020 7424 9444.
